Romantic Realism is a genre of art that embraces values. It presents a world of characters, whether in literature or art, who represent what life ought to be. What kind of life is depicted? It’s a life of purposefulness and heroism. It’s the individual who lives his life with dignity and integrity. A book that embodies all the qualities of Romantic Realism is Crosspoints: A Novel of Choice. Written by Alexandra York, it is a love story set in the world of art and archeology. The story introduces us to Tara, a young archaeologist who must make a choice between two men who love her passionately. Yet the men, Dimitrios, an archeologist and Leon, a famous postmodern artist hold very distinct views on life, love and happiness.
In essence this is a philosophical book. The philosophy that Tara, Dimitrios and Leon holds affects the choices each of these individuals make. Here’s a sneak peek. Tara is talking with Leon about what Crosspoint means to ones life decisions. She tells Leon:
Crosspoint is Papa’s word for marking those times in our lives when choice or lack of choice can determine the direction upon which our future, successive crosspoints will depend. It’s a lifetime process, of course, because life is made up of thousands of crosspoints. Most people miss most of them, don’t even know they’ve come to one when they’re standing right on it. They believe that fate or environment or heredity or circumstance or luck or the stars or Divine Will control their destiny. But Papa has always drilled it into our heads that our own personal destiny is just that, our own. Our own choice.
This novel packed a punch for me. The setting of the novel in the art world is perfect. The type of art that is produced in a given society is a barometer of what that society holds as valuable. It’s a sort of showcase of what a society sees as important. This novel will not disappoint. Check it out for yourself.
