It’s a known fact that our public school system is in serious trouble. But what about those students who are not typical or average students? I just finished reading an interesting book about left-brainers. Katherine Beals, a mother of 3 left-brainers wrote a book called Raising a Left-Brain Child in a Right-Brain World: Strategies for Helping Bright, Quirky, Socially Awkward Children to Thrive at Home and at School.
Beals book focuses on a segment of the population who lean towards analytical thinking. Here’s a list of some common characteristics:
- Shy, aloof, and/or socially awkward
- Prefer to play and do schoolwork alone
- Tend to keep feelings to themselves
- Interact more easily with adults than with peers
- Having trouble reading facial expressions and body language
- Highly critical, skeptical, and argumentative
- Need and strive for precision
- A tendency to lecture or “talk at” others
- Deep, all-absorbing interests or seemingly encylopedic knowledge of particular topics
I proudly admit that I am a left-brainer. The only test I know of that examines learning/personality styles is Meyers-Briggs. I’m INTJ. What I liked most about Beals book was how she chronicles the meteoric struggles of analytical thinkers. Reading this book got me thinking about my experiences in school. My mother got a hold of my records. After reviewing them, I found I was labelled learning disabled. They had me taking all kinds of tests, which I remember. But during this time I was missing valuable class time. I remember having trouble with math, but in particular, story problems. My parents hired a tutor who helped me tremendously. In hindsight, math instruction was not as good as it should have been. Keep in mind the school district I attended was the top in the state and nation. We still had subject centered teaching. But according to Beals, subjects are hardly taught today. This makes it very difficult for analytical type students who crave structure and independent coursework.
For instance, Beals points out that public education does not teach subjects but teaches feelings. Some of the examples she outlines are truly bizarre and have absolutely nothing to do with education. Beals explains as follows:
….In class after class, and assignment after assignment, students are expected to share personal information and feelings( in what are sometimes called “reflections”, or interview others about theirs.
Thanks to the widespread conviction among educators that the best way to interest students in new material is through connections “to self”, even math and science classes turn personal. A geology unit at one elementary schools beings with students selecting a favorite rock and writing about why they like it. The first assignment in a popular new middle school math book asks students to pick out a favorite number and write notes about it throughout the first unit(e.g. “a multiple of five” or “not divisible by three”); the final assignment in another has them selecting a favorite work sample from their math portfolios and writing about why they are proud of it….. The belief, popular with education specialists, that communicating about math is essential to learning it has some teachers requiring students to log in “math journals” their problem-solving strategies and “reflections” about mathematics. (bold added)
So let’s get this straight. Instead of learning about the formations of rocks, the student must write about how the rock makes him feel?!?!??!? Or, instead of learning about how to calculate fractions and algebraic equations, the student journals about how it makes him feel to learn about calculating fractions and algebra?!?!? See how absurd this is? No wonder American students score so low on international exams.
If I were in school now I would be completely loss. Although Beals points out that this lack of structure favors more right-brainers. I can’t see how it could benefit these types of students either. Education now breeds the anti-conceptual mentality. I discuss this here.
I don’t think Beals realizes how destructive this is for right-brainers and for our society as a whole. How can we maintain an informed, civilized society when anti-intellectualism is the rage? Beals thinks that working within the public school system will garner results in helping the analytical child. Unfortunately, I disagree. A government school system does not see students as individuals. Each child has a different way of learning. It is not in the public schools interest to tailor subjects for the individual child. Thanks to John Dewey’s destruction of subject focused education in this country, all types of educational fads are used in public school students to the detriment of real learning. Since parents are forced to pay property taxes to finance these dumbed-down schools, it is difficult for parents to pay tuition to enroll their children in schools of their choice. From personal experience, my brother ended up graduating from a private military school. The high school he attended was not working for him. Yet, my parents still pay property taxes. This financing of schools through property taxes is outrageous and must stop!! I wish Dr. Beals well in raising her analytical children. And keep fighting to make sure they receive a proper education that respects their rational minds.
