The title says it all: SHAM-How The Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless. That’s the name of the book I just finished reading. Written by Steve Salerno, the acronym for SHAM is Self-Help and Actualization Movement. Make no mistake we have all been affected by the pop psychology movement. From Oprah Winfrey to Phil McGraw, there isn’t a day that goes by when we are bombarded by their infinite “wisdom”. But Salerno chronicles that these gurus have had a perilous affect on American society.
Education and medical care have been most infiltrated by self-help ideology. As I’ve stated in previous posts, public education negates the conceptual faculty, on principle. But there is a flip side. The self-esteem movement has made tremendous headway. So now, he have two generations of kids who are self confident illiterates! As Salerno states:
Instead of encouraging excellence, educators have decided to banish failure by defining it out of existence—–while at the same time persuading America’s schoolchildren that they are automatically special, wonderful, brilliant. [in original italics]
Thanks to the emphasis on self-esteem, our schools now give ungraded tests; are plagued by the outer-limits degree of grade inflation known as “grade creep”; ban most competitive games during gym class or even recess periods; and, above all, replace hard-core, carefully planned, historically documented curricula in math, English, and the sciences with touchy-feely, free-form, ad hoc exercises and “play activities” meant to teach students how to “make nice”. If they teach anything at all. (bold added)
Medical care has felt the affects of psychobabble too. I’m sure you remember the crusade against vaccinating children because of their supposed link to autism. Jenny McCarthy, a hack of an actress was at the forefront of this madness. Many people took this woman at face value. Despite the fact that there is no scientific evidence that links vaccinations to autism, McCarthy was given a podium to spew her nonsense as scientific fact. Thank you Oprah.
Unfortunately, for parents who are easily led by the nose to believe quackery; if they bothered to read history, they will see what happened in the past with measles, Smallpox, Polio, and other deadly diseasesthat shortened the lives of children, and everyone else. Although not directly responsible for the rise of the self-help movement, quack medicine has been emboldened by self-appointed “experts”, who fuel medical scams. Salerno explains thusly:
SHAM preaches individual decision making and the pursuit of private truth but is openly contemptuous of the individual whose personal truth leads him to take the conventional path.
Salerno gives examples of individuals who refused medical treatment despite suffering from cancer. The author also explains the lack of rationality on the part of the individual who uses alternative medicine. Explaining:
The alt-med[alternative medicine] mind-set thus promotes a bizarre, inverse credibility wherein the further something strays from mainstream approval, the more cachet it achieves among alt-med subscribers. Can a substance be administered in such minute/dilute dosages that (a) it cannot possibly have adverse side effects and yet(b) it magically realizes its full theraputic action? The ability to believe simultaneously in (a) and (b) is what underlies the growing “field” of homeopathy.
As much as the right wing claims that religion is in decline in America, I conclude that it is alive and well through the self-help movement. Dr. Phil and Oprah are the new prophets. Mysticism has so infected our culture, that people are willing to abnegate the use of their own minds to any demigod or guru whose in vogue. This just underscores the importance of philosophy. It is only with a rational philosophy that guides individuals to make conscious, life-affirming decisions. It’s tragic that we don’t live in a culture that respects reason. If there was a respect for philosophy, there wouldn’t be the helpless, hopeless hordes who run to Dr. Phil with their problems.
