I finished a delightful children’s novel that I think adults could enjoy as well. Titled A Turn For DeWurst, writer Sydney Kendall tells the story of a highly intelligent girl named Astrid whose small town school has been taken over by a power-lusting teacher. This teacher has managed to convince the town that teaching conformity and obedience to school children is a proper method of education. Kendall has created characters that are so authentic, they easily reminded me of individuals I encountered during my school years.
It takes Astrid and her friends to put an end to the mind-numbing education they are forced to endure. What I liked most about this book is how it showcases the types of ideas individuals hold and how it affects their daily lives. This is an excellent book to introduce to pre-teens and teens about the nature of independence and the proper morality for which it depends. Enjoy.
