One of my favorite subjects in school was history. A few months ago I read book review from The New York Sun, a now defunct newspaper about The Forsaken: An American Tragedy in Stalin’s Russia. This book details a little known tragedy in American history. During the Great Depression over 2ooo Americans decided to leave the country for Russia in the belief that they would find jobs and a better life.
Uprooting their families, these Americans naively believed the promises of a good life in Soviet Russia. Unfortunately, these Americans will face the spectre of totalitarianism that would utimately lead to their murders in prisons and gulags. I always knew that there were and still are sympathizers of Communism. This is something I could never understand. Particularly those who live in the West. None of these Americans knew the truth about life in a communist country. There were so many falsehoods about Russia, this is due to the Great Depression and peoples hatred for America and the supposed deficiencies capitalist system in general. They were willing to risk everything to live in this country they knew nothing about.
The writer of this book, Tim Tzouliadis, chronicles those individuals who really believed in the pronoucements of the new Russia. But by the time they realized the error it was too late. During Stalin’s Terror of mass hysteria, show trials and executions, the Americans got caught up in this chaos and died in the process. What the book details in stark reality is the complicity of our own government. The behaviors of Franklin Roosevelt and the ambassadors he appointed sickens me. Their fawing over Stailn in the face of evidence of his murderous schemes is an obscenity to me. A number of Americans tried desperately to get out of the country, unfortunately they received no help from the embassy. Not only did ambassadors receive hundreds of letters from concerned family members in the States, many of these trapped Americans risked their own lives just to enter the Moscow embassy, but to no avail. They were simply ignored and promptly disappeared.
I recommend this book to anyone who does not want history to repeat itself. I cannot help but to think that there is a connection to how our government is handling the threat of Islamic terrorism to the pacifying behavior towards Stalin’s Soviet Union. The constant pandering and placating to Stalin; which included Ford Motor Company opening a factory and the notorious Lend-Lease Program. It should be noted that all equipment sent to the USSR was used to transport victims during the terror and during World War II to gulags. All foodstuffs and clothing were given to gulag guards. None of the equipment went to the war effort! FDR was made a total fool. The fact that he appointed political hacks makes me lose even more respect for FDR.
Right under their noses Americans were being murdered and nothing was done to protect them. Too bad this story has not been told until now. To me this a cautionary tale of the incompetency of the federal government. The feds responsibility is to the American citizen only. And the fact that they would not face reality, they are responsible for the Americans deaths. The level of cruelty from Stalin and Roosevelt’s administration should give everyone pause when thinking of Islamic terrorism. If our own government wants to “talk” to Islamic regimes that want to kill us, if we are constantly reliant on oil from these regimes, when we are capable of producing our own oil. How can any American assume the government will protect us? I for do not believe the government cares about the citizenry. So I make the effort to inform myself and so should you!
