Everyone in the country was riveted by the murder of Matthew Shepard. As was reported I believed that Shepard was murdered because he was gay. Stephen Jimenez’s book, The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About The Murder Of Matthew Shepard, exposes the real story behind the bogus headlines of Shepard’s death. When I first heard about this book, I was stunned that Shepard’s homosexuality did not factor in his murder. I immediately had to read this book. Jimenez through his extensive research, and risking his life, uncovered an underworld of the methamphetamine culture that Shepard was enmeshed in-which ultimately led to his death.
Upon reflection, the outcome of this tragic case has led to consequences which I believe have had a deleterious impact on our society. The first for me is the continued failure of the so-called “War on Drugs”. Through Jimenez’s extensive research, Wyoming is a major drug hub/distribution center for trafficking methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin. Despite the “efforts” of the DEA, and the massive SWAT Teams in any American city, drug trafficking continues unabated. Moreover, because of drug laws, we now have continued violations of the Fourth Amendment. Just take a look at this story about a woman who was forced to submit to humiliating exams because an improperly trained drug dog alerted to possible drugs. So much for probable cause.
Jimenez uncovered that Matthew Shepard was a willing participant in the Wyoming drug scene. Not only was he an active drug user, he was also slowly taking over an incarcerated dealers’ territory. Shepard made regular visits to Colorado to drop off and sell drugs. This aspect of Shepard’s life was deliberately concealed during the trial. And the media didn’t bother to investigate further.
No matter the outrageous drug statutes or moral crusades against drugs, those who want them will make every effort to get them. Shepard had serious emotional and psychological problems that he chose not to deal with. Shepard had a history of sexual abuse going back to his childhood. Rather than seek out proper therapy, he joined the bottomless pit of the drug culture. Shepard’s life was a mess. No “War on Drugs” will change the bad choices of people.
The second consequence of the Matthew Shepard case is the gay establishments continued assault on the nation’s constitutional foundations. The purpose of the Gay Rights movement was about the right to be let alone. In the past, homosexuality in this country was illegal. Being outed by someone would have been devastating both professionally and personally. Law enforcement then had a field day with terrorizing through unprovoked raids on gay bars. The outcome of this trial was hate crime legislation which I think has had a pernicious effect on our justice system. Throughout the trial, special interest groups kept pushing for hate crime laws. This went all the way up to the Clinton White House. This was a perfect opportunity for Clinton to jump on the bandwagon. It was during this time that Clinton was dealing with the fallout of his sexual misconduct with Monica Lewinsky. What better way to divert attention from his bad behavior. I also believe that due to his shameful selling out of gay and lesbian serviceman with the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, he wanted to use the Shepard case as a political tool.
Hate crime laws rest on faulty premises that undermine the principle of individual rights. Our justice system rests on equal protection under the law–which is the basis of objective law. With hate crime laws, this has been turned on its head. Our justice system is now governed by non-objective laws that give special legal protection to designated minority groups. Rather than seeing ALL crimes as hate crime, we now have a two tier system where men, whites, black males, and anyone else not in a protected group, don’t get the same legal protection. This is directly related to hate crime laws. I also include the First Amendment as being compromised under hate crime legislation as well. Persecution for “thought crimes” has risen under the guise of these outrageous hate crime laws.
The final consequence of the Matthew Shepard case is the duplicitous media. Throughout this entire case, the media repeatedly promoted the meme that Shepard was killed because of his homosexuality. The larger issue, which was ignored by the superficial media was the methamphetamine epidemic spreading throughout the Rocky Mountains states and beyond. The gay community has been greatly affected by this horrible drug which is linked to new cases of HIV/AIDS, with Shepard being one of those cases. I believe his HIV status is directly related to his drug use. But the incompetent media didn’t bother to do the legwork that Jimenez did to uncover the truth about Matthew Shepard’s tragic life.
In the end, Jimenez did an important thing by telling the truth about the sad, destructive life of Matthew Shepard. From what I read, Jimenez has taken a lot of heat about his book. No matter the pushback this book is important for all of us in understanding how the drug culture can destroy anyone who chooses to live in that world.
